Don’t let the stress of the holiday season derail your weight loss goals

We are in the midst of the business of the holiday season. This is often a stressful time of year for many people. What should be a joyous and family focused time if often filled with the stress of overspending, feeling the pressure to fit in all of the festivities, and sometimes stress can come from getting together with other family members. Stress is directly linked to weight gain. Stress causes your Cortisol levels to be elevated and elevated Cortisol levels cause fat storage. Stress also increases our cravings for sugar consumption and high carbohydrate foods. This is a double whammy. Maybe it’s time we step back and focus on what truly matters to us. Not only will keeping your stress under control help you to better navigate your way through the holidays but it will result in you having a more joyful experience. Some things you can do to help to keep your stress levels low is to say no to things and people that are not in your best interest. Don’t feel obligated to do something because you think you have to if it is causing you turmoil and angst. It’s okay to say no to something if it sacrifices the health and wellbeing of you and your family. Not only is it okay it is your duty to protect yourself and your loved ones. Another great way to keep your stress levels low is to move your body everyday. Making it a priority to get some movement in whether that is a walk, weight training, or yoga will help you to feel better, look better, and have more focus for the rest of the day. Focusing on your nutrition during this time will help you as well. Focus on prioritizing protein and limiting the sugary snacks and foods high in carbohydrates. Processed foods and foods high in carbohydrates will cause you to eat more frequently and often times consume more than you would if you ate protein, healthy fats, and a lower carbohydrate diet. Your energy levels and mental focus will improve as well.
