The Beauty Industry’s Role in Infertility

It breaks my heart to see how many couples struggle with infertility. You would think that in these modern times people would be able to get pregnant easier not the other way around. I know that infertility can be caused by a number of different things but in this article I wanted to specifically address the chemicals lurking in your everyday beauty care products. Chemicals such as parabens, pthalates, BPA, and many other endocrine disrupting chemicals commonly found in beauty care products have been directly linked to infertility. The Beauty Industry is highly unregulated. Companies are able to hide dangerous ingredients under the umbrella ingredient listed as Fragrance. The average woman uses 12 different beauty products per day. According to Dr. Kathryn M. Rexrode who is an associate professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Women’s Health at Harvard, "Products are tested to make sure they don't cause short-term problems, such as skin irritation. But they're not tested for long-term safety," A great place to find safter alternatives is Environmental Working Group. They have a database that will tell you what ingredients are in each product and if they have negative health consequences and you can decide if you want to use that product or look for a safer alternative. We live in a world today where you have to be your biggest advocate. By lowering the amount of toxic burden you are placing on your body, eating a healthier diet, and getting some movement in daily you will be amazed at how much better you can feel.
